Situated in the common boarder of Wuyishan City, Jianyang County and Guanze County, Wuyi Mountain Natural Reserve is 52 km long from the south to the north and 22 km wide from the east to the west and is covering an area of 570 km². There are 377 mountains and peaks at over 1,000 meters above the sea level; the main peak Huanggang is 2,158 meters’ high, known as the highest peak in East China.

 

The forest coverage of the reserve is up to 92%, with about 3,000 or 4,000 varieties of plants including 149 families and 1,800 species of higher plants, enjoying the reputation of “Natural Botanical Garden”.

 

There are more than 400 species of wild animals in the reserve with about 100 species of beasts in vertebrates, such as South China tiger, macaque, hair-crown deer, white neck king pheasant, yellow belly tragopan, pangolin, serow and other animals under the State’s protection. There are also some other animals that are rarely or seldom seen in our country such as moustache toad, boa constrictor, bamboo rat, closed-shell turtle, salamander and tree toad etc. The area around Guadun is the resting place for migrant birds flying from the north to the south or vice versa and it is one of the regions with the richest resources of birds in the world. With over 300 species of birds, it is reputed to be the “Birds’ Palace of Origin”. Dazhuran is the sample site of the specimens of biosimulation of the world and is referred to as “the Insect World” and “the Kingdom of Snake”. There are 32 orders and 1,000 families of insects throughout the country and 31 orders and over 300 families have been specified here.
